We are a wealthy nation, in more ways than one.

And yet, there is significance to firsts, to beginnings and “how we started”s. So here are some thoughts fresh on the back of the first month of this new season.

The kids were inspired to put up a concert for family who’d be visiting our home. With the teeniest bit of scaffolding (“hmm why not think of concerts we’ve attended in the past?”) they were off, deep into imagination and creation.

We can talk about the skills they learnt in the process - using a dictionary to look up the spelling of words, composing music and writing lyrics, thinking through processes, yada yada - and I am tempted to, but that feels all too modern and analytical 😬 after all, this is the kind of play my sister and I indulged in throughout our childhood years.

As a modern parent, a question I have to constantly face is “am I truly okay to step back and let them be kids, without trying to pick out all the positive outcomes and quantifiable output generated from their natural actions?” It is only when I can let go of the need for every moment to be optimised that I can truly relish the moment and let it sink in.

Soaking in the moments: breakfasts with the kids, mornings doing lessons with the eldest, and lots of down time in the afternoons after everyone’s done with school. Much of which is so familiar from the pre-holiday chaos. Plus a few new things.

A few more weeks of this before life changes again. We are excited. 🐣
